Spirometry Interpretation Site

Before using this program these papers should be read and understood:

1. American Thoracic Society. Lung Function Testing: Selection of Reference Values and Interpretative Strategies. Am Rev Respir Dis 1991; 144:1202-1218.

2. Knudson RJ, et al. Changes in the Normal Maximal Expiratory Flow-Volume Curve with Growth and Aging. Am Rev Respir Dis 1983; 127:725-734.

This program attempts to follow the strategies described in the above papers.

This site may be used as a teaching adjunct for physicians, pulmonary function technologists, or respiratory care practitioners. Actual interpretation of spirometry should be done by fully qualified individuals with expertise in all areas of pulmonary function.

TO USE THIS PROGRAM YOUR PREDICTEDS SHOULD COME FROM THE ABOVE PAPER BY KNUDSON.

In cases of abnormal spirometry, measurement of lung volumes (by plethysmography) is frequently advisable to better assess cause of abnormality. DLCO may also be helpful.
