The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor (OSHA) - National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have specific rules regarding pulmonary function testing required by the cotton dust standard.

For example, persons other than licenced physicians who administer the test need to have completed a NIOSH approved spirometry training course. It appears that even those with other formal spirometry training (eg Respiratory Therapists) need to complete this course.

There are specifics regarding equipment, predicted values, test performance, etc.
